When we were in Europe, we tried to save money by doing many things by walking (we love walking and it’s healthy!) and go to sightseeing spots that didn’t cost a fortune. I was happy when I stumbled upon a FREE Jack the Ripper tour. You just have to show up at the meeting spot and voila, enjoy the tour. Simple right?
We joined the company Free Tours of London, since June 2016 known as Strawberry Tours.
I don’t want to spoil much, so I just give you a glimpse of what this tour has to offer!
When reading their website, I was hooked immediately.
Discover one of London’s darkest chapters – the shocking murders of Jack the Ripper. This walking tour promises chills and frights as we visit the locations of the Whitechapel Murders, discover more about the victims and the gruesome details of their murders and explore the conspiracy theories surrounding the identity of the killer – the world’s most chilling, unsolved murder mystery!
Shaun and I are into gruesome stories and Jack the Ripper is the most famous one in London. Of course we had to join this awesome tour! According to the description online, the meeting point is at the Tower Hill station and you have to look out for a person with a bright orange umbrella (now it has changed into red umbrella, like strawberry-red). Don’t be surprised if you walk into many people holding an umbrella, because it seems that many tour companies are having Jack the Ripper tour around the same time starting at the same meeting point. Our guy with the orange umbrella was spotted easily due to the big writings on it (can’t hardly miss ‘FREE TOUR’ which is written on it!). After waiting several minutes we started with about 25-30 people including one guide. The tour takes about 1,5 – 2 hours.
And it’s FREE?? Yes! Well, kinda.
It’s based on ‘pay what it’s worth’. The guides are all volunteers and don’t get much (or minimum) paid for what they are doing. So the pay that you are giving them is basically their tip/pocketmoney. You don’t have to pay, but it’s a nice gesture. After all, you normally pay more than 10 pounds for a tour like this.
Throughout the tour you learn more about the possible suspects who are believed to be behind the murders and hear more about Jack The Ripper’s most famous victims, while visiting most famous sited related to Jack the Ripper. I won’t say much… You just have to find out yourself!
