During my short stay in Fukuoka, I didn’t thought of joining any tours because I was on a low budget and rather spend my time sightseeing/walking around the city. But who can say no to a free tour with free beers?? no matter how packed your schedule is, a visit to the Asahi Beer Hakata Brewery is a must!
Because this free tour is popular among tourists and even locals, make sure you reserve your spot in advance! If you can’t speak Japanese, don’t worry, just ask your hotel or tourist information center to call for you. English guided tours are on specific times.
Hakara Brewery is on walking distance from the train station with signs clearly pointing to the brewery. When entering the building you have to register at the front desk. Because we were joining a Japanese guided group (English group was fully booked), we were given a headphone with English speaking voice so we at least could follow the story.
The group had 25 – 30 people and there were multiple groups going on.
No photos/videos were allowed during the tour but believe me, it’s pretty fun! Because we were there on a Saturday, the factory was closed. We could ‘t see the process at all as all the machines were turned off. Make sure to visit during the week so you can experience the making of from a close up.
After the tour we headed to the bar area where you can order up to three beers. There are tables assigned for you already with some salted snacks.
The beer come in a surprisingly big glass and you can try different kinds like the classic Asahi Super Dry, Asahi Ice Cold and Asahi Black.
Drinking three glasses in 20 minutes was quite a challenge but lots of fun! There was a small souvenir section for you to buy more beer or Asahi-related merchandise.
I would definitely visit Asahi Brewery again! They have many factories spread out in Japan so search online to find the nearest one to you and reserve your spot soon.
